The Aevitan

Aevitan are bipedal with an average height of between 1.5 and 1.8 meters, although some subspecies can exceed 2 meters. Many Aevitan have human-like features while others express a range of reptilian characteristics, including scaly skin, pronounced claws, and prehensile tails. All Aevitan appear to share the defining characteristic of horn-like protrusions that sweep back along the cranium. These develop during adolescence and continue to grow through adulthood.

The more reptilian subspecies have retained unique evolutionary traits such as the production of a caustic compound in their saliva that can be exhaled in a fine mist along with dissolved lipids. The mixture ignite in a spectacular fireball upon contact with the air. Mostly harmless unless coming in direct contact with the skin, this adaptation was used to temporarily blind prey or attackers when hunting in night-side regions of the planet.

Aevitan reproduction is centered around long complicated courtship rituals. Females are only fertile every decade or so and typically take on a number of mates, storing and using their genetic material to fertilize her ovum. She carries the embryo in a special abdominal pouch for the first year of gestation. During this time the males vie for her favor in hopes she will pass on more of their contribution as females can selectively pass on the genetic traits of one or more partners.

At about 13 months the embryonic sack is released, in modern Aevitan society, it is left in the care of a breeding facility. The parents have no further connection. In ancestral Aevitan this breeding method allowed for offspring to be stashed away in small protected areas safe from constant environmental hazards. The anonymous eggs are submerged in nutrient pools with hundreds of other offspring. After about 36 months the embryonic sack, stretched thin and transparent, breaks releasing the fully developed infant.


Aevitan children never know their parents. Growing up in educational colonies they develop strong sibling bonds that last throughout their lives. As well, adult Aevitan, not knowing who may be their offspring treat any young with similar traits as if they were their own. Thus youth have the benefit of many parental figures and expansive social family groups. This has fostered a supportive and open society where, at least in the modernized Aevitan cultures, citizens enjoy a great deal of social equality. This is in sharp contrasts to their reclusive and un-trusting attitude towards outsiders.

Aevitan are extreme isolationists, and while they do have some trade relations with other races, interactions are rare. Aevitan space is intently patrolled and protected. Anyone violating Aevitan territory receive no warning and no leniency, all trespassers are destroyed. This policy has put the Aevitan at odds with a number of other alien cultures.

The Aevitan are obsessed with immortality. In their quest to live forever they’ve developed incredible advances in medical augmentation, bionics, and cybernetics. They’ve also managed to extend their lifespans 20 times the natural limit using a substance known as “Ar’Numa”, despite one of the side effect of Ar’Numa being degenerative blindness. As such much of the modernized civilization has cybernetic ocular prosthetics.


The Aevitan homeworld of Ad’strun is the only planet in the binary star system Acry’duo. Roughly five billion years ago one of the Acry’duo suns collapsed into a pulsar destroying all other planets in the system. The debris coalesced and settled forming a ring like mass around the suns.

Ad’struns unique geology means the planet is subject to violent geomagnetic storms, gravimetric fluctuations resulting in frequent earthquakes. Combined with intense bursts of radiation from the pulsar the Aevitan have evolved in the harshest of conditions. Because of the hazards Aevitan culture evolved in dense jungles near the planet's outer edge.

Roughly 80 thousand years ago ancient Aevitan discovered, and learned to harness the power of, a dense mineral called Kul’darah. The substance became associated with various protector gods and at the center of numerous bloody territorial conflicts for about eight thousand years.

As Aevitan civilization entered the scientific age, about 3000 years ago, Kul’darah remained center stage. Refined and purified this element is used in nearly all Aevitan technology in some form or another, including the massive geo-stabilizers that have allowed them to leave the jungles and build their massive plateaus cities.

Kul’darah is used to strengthen building materials, to make ship hulls, and in power generation. It is also the key component in Ar’Numa, responsible for Aevitan longevity. Its extensive use lead to its depletion, and about 1200 years ago Kul’darah sources were nearly exhausted. This scarcity drove Aevitan space technologies as they set out to mine Kul’darah in other regions of the Ad’strun ring.


Aevitan prefer, and will violently protect their isolation. Trade is rare and are typically done on outposts and in distant regions. Very few have ever been granted passage into Aevitan space. The Aevitan have gone to war with the Aran, Mord, and Cirecidus on a number of occasions.

The internally political structure of the Aevitan is a feudal-like hierarchy ruled over by a single emperor/empress called the Thea’zar. As there are no historical records of lineage, the rulers are determined by a unique birthmark which is believed to signify nobility. The same concept is applied to all that serve under the Thea’zar. All members of the 50 noble families are all determined and grouped by identifying birthmarks.

Family rank and political influence is decided at Tak’lahn, death games held every 6 years in which the major families must volunteer to compete in mortal combat. The results of the games often results in great shifts in power in Aevitan culture.

Autonomous Nanomachine Task System (ANTS)

Developed in 2143 by Bordstrum Konchū, the world renowned expert in molecular manipulation using nano-machines and a third generation Nano-engineer. His Grandfather Ito Konchū was recognized as one of the pioneers of nano-machine design. And his Father, Wilhelm Konchū, was responsible for most of the nano-tech used in modern medicine.

Molecular nano manipulation involves using very advanced nano-machines to restructure molecules in order to enhance their properties or create new ones. The process was widely used in the manufacturing of alloys and polymers, as well as micro circuitry, and of course, the manufacturing of other nano-machines.

The Autonomous Nano-machine Task System (ANTS) is uses nano-machines to perform extremely complex tasks independent of an operator. Once programmed the system either completes a one time task or to perform continued maintenance, using a basic distributed AI to handle resource management. There are various forms of the system commonly used.

Manufacturing ANTS

Manufacturing ANT Systems can range in scale from the manufacturing micro circuitry to the manufacturing of ships and and buildings. They are efficient and precise, able to build even the most complex structures from the ground up. Industrial ANTS can produce a 12 meter space ready shuttle craft in roughly 18 hours. They can work in almost any environment including the vacuum of space where they can produce a fully operational 120 meter tall Isis Tempus space station in about 18 days. The only limiting factor for the system is available power source and available raw material. The power is provided by low yield nueon radiation, either as a generated field or more precise beam. The raw material comes in the form of Carbon Slugs. These slugs are comprised of densely packed base elements that can be restructured by the nano-machines into anything they might need. They’re typically mostly Carbon isotopes but the composition and size varies depending on application.

Maintenance ANTS

Maintenance ANTS are nano-machines built into almost all complex structures such as ships and space stations. They can be powered by a charge carried through the structure itself or by an external Nueon power source. Their purpose is the constant maintenance of the structure in which they are embedded. In large structures like space stations the ANTS are constantly repairing damage. In smaller structures, such as ships, they typically require an external power source and will use carbon stores when available, but will also redistribute existing structure to perform emergency repairs.

Medical ANTS

Medical ANTS are very specialized. Every human born since 2110 has been implanted with Medical ANTS in some form. They do not use Nueon radiation, instead they use the body’s electrical charge to perform maintenance tasks such as minor cellular damage. They can also be charged externally to boost their healing processes and aid in the repair and recovery of severe injury. In extreme cases they can even sustain brain function for days.

ANTS are a vital technology for human civilization, but they have been used for so long that they are often taken for granted.

The Aran

The Aran are a human-like species having evolved on a planet very similar to Earth. There are a few defining characteristics that differentiate the Aran from Humans. The eyes of the Aran have a tricuspid iris and a natural phosphorescence. The Aran also have some subtle differences in musculature that make them on average stronger than Humans. Even the reproductive system and development of the Aran are similar to Human.

Aran females are sexually ravenous and appear to have complete control over their fertility. They secrete a pheromone that is believed to play a role in male subservience. It has shown to have minor effects on Human males, causing impaired motor skills and slurred speech with prolonged exposure.


The Aran are a warlike culture; however, unlike the Mord, the Aran are not a series of scattered empires engaging in ritualistic conflicts among themselves. They comprise a vast unified empire, controlling innumerable planets, star bases, and trade routes throughout the Eridanus cluster.

Aran civilization is matriarchal with the men being absolutely subservient, and treated as prized pets at best. In fact much of the Aran economy revolves around the breeding trade, where males are bought and sold like livestock based on specific genetic traits.

The combination of selective breeding, superior training, advanced technology, and a fanatical devotion to their female masters, Aran males make up one of the largest, and widely feared military forces in the known Universe.


Very little is known of Aran history, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that their culture has changed significantly, other than technologically, over the last 130,000 years.


The Aran political structure is fairly straightforward. Every territory is controlled by a Sovereign, each of whom answer to the Supreme Empress on the home world of Araenielle. Territory and rank are determined by a system of favor, operating on a 10 year cycle.

At the beginning of every cycle, whichever Sovereign who gains the Supreme Empress’s favor by conquest of new territory or resource production, is rewarded with the territory of the Sovereign in the lowest favor. The disgraced Sovereign not only loses her territory, but her life as well in a ceremonial execution.

Being in the Supreme Empress’s top favor is not always the best place. When a young Sovereign reaches the age of fertility, she is given a portion of the highest ranking Sovereign’s territory to begin her rule. This system ensures that the weak are culled, and the strong never get so strong as to challenge the Supreme rule.

Despite having a desire for conquest, the Aran are also capable diplomats and often choose to expand their empire through trade relations rather than war.

Asteroid Mining

Between 2118 and 2170 asteroid mining was highly glamorized in the media on earth. Numerous shows and movies were made highlighting the thrill and adventure of being a Rock Jockey. Children collected and traded Jockey profiles intently following their career stats, such as how many rocks cracked and ore tons logged. As a result hundreds of rookies with dreams of fame and fortune would make for Titus every month.

The reality was, albeit astoundingly profitable, asteroid mining was brutally difficult and extremely dangerous. A skilled Asteroid Jockey could make as much as a corporate CEO back on earth in their first year – if they lasted that long. Working with massive, constantly moving, often volatile and unpredictable asteroids in the vacuum of space took a special mentality. 90% of rookies bowed out within their first two months.

Garnering less fame, but far more profit, were the mining companies themselves. Along with the Gratestar Mining Company there were five other Titus super powers. Asteroid Inc., Haulidyte, Grimms Consolidated, HLS Mining, and StarKat Drilling Co., were all vying for prime sectors.

Competition between crews was fierce. The Titus asteroid field was massive but not every asteroid was a gold mine. As well the further into the field you ventured the more dangerous it became. The inner field was dense and very active, and therefore more unpredictable. Once a survey came in reporting a stable sector ripe with ore it was a race to see which crew could mark the best rocks and pull the most ore.

Asteroid mining is still a vital part of industry wherever humans settle, and while still quite lucrative, it has lost its popular mystique.
