The Toran

Overview

The Toran are a humanoid race. In fact their biology holds the key as to why there are so many humanoid species in the Universe. Genetic markers in the Toran genes can be traced back to more than 10 billion years. Making them the oldest known race in the Universe.

Biology

Toran physiology is very similar to humans. Notable differences are a larger heart. They are completely hairless, their bodies have no hair follicles at all. Their ears are very small and vestigial, they hear via a specialized structure situated behind the jaw bone. Their eyes can see in the ultraviolet and x ray spectrum in low light conditions. This ability seems to shut off above a certain ambient light level. There are also a few neurological differences with the Toran having .02 more neural capacity than the average human.

Culture

The original Toran homeworld was destroyed billions of years ago and their current homeworld of Torenus is located so far towards the outer reaches of the universe that no one has ever seen it including most Torans. They live in a small communities throughout several galaxies and are rare but far from hidden.

At the core of Toran culture is the Toa. This is the foundation of their spiritual and social belief structures. The Toran believe that the Universe itself is a living sentient entity. They also claim to be able to communicate directly with this Universe deity and thus know its secrets.

Through their understanding of the Universe and their place in it the Toran culture has long since eliminated the need for, and use of, social identifiers. Torans do not use names or titles of any kind among themselves. They have a mild telepathic ability that allows them to convey their "essence" to each other. This makes each Toran is truly a unique individual in that they are literally identified by the culmination of their life experiences. They find us and other cultures confusing because we define ourselves by context of our roles in society rather than defining ourselves as ourselves. We are social copies of each other in comparison.

The Toa

While the Toa is not considered a religion, particularly to the Toran, it has spawned trillions of followers throughout the universe across hundreds of thousands of races and species. These followers have modified the Toa belief system to their various cultures with the end goal of achieving the ability to also communicate with the Universe.

One of the major tenets of the Tao is also the basis to the belief that the Toran can see "through time". They do in fact have incredible perceptive and predictive abilities. These abilities are attributed to practice of Non-linear Perception. The Tao teaches that time has no beginning and no end, it happening always and through meditation and practice it is possible to see all past and future as if present.

The Tao also Describes the Universe as a sentient entity that did not create all life and matter as much as it "observed" it into existence.

"All was alone until it opened it's eyes and became aware of everything"

Politics

There are intellectual and spiritual representatives called The Light. but the Toran are really not involved in political matters beyond local issues that may affect their communities.

The Torician

The Toricians are much like the ancient samurai of the earth. They are a warrior race that only respects strength, honor, and loyalty. Their warriors fearless and ruthless but never reckless, planning battles to perfection.

The Toricians are dark grayed skinned and short in stature, averaging 4-5 feet tall. They’re muscular with almost reptilian eyes and claw-like fingers.

Honor is their greatest of law. To lie, deceive, or cheat, even to ones enemy is considered unforgivable and punishable by self-imposed disembowelment. If they refused to kill themselves then their entire family is executed publicly.

The Aevitan

Location

  • Homeworld: Ad’strun
  • System: Acry’duo
  • Galaxy: Vigilem (NGC-1291)
  • Galactic Group: Eridanus

Biology

Aevitan are bipedal with an average height of between 1.5 and 1.8 meters, although some subspecies can exceed 2 meters. Many Aevitan have human-like features while others express a range of reptilian characteristics, including scaly skin, pronounced claws, and prehensile tails. All Aevitan appear to share the defining characteristic of horn-like protrusions that sweep back along the cranium. These develop during adolescence and continue to grow through adulthood.

The more reptilian subspecies have retained unique evolutionary traits such as the production of a caustic compound in their saliva that can be exhaled in a fine mist along with dissolved lipids. The mixture ignite in a spectacular fireball upon contact with the air. Mostly harmless unless coming in direct contact with the skin, this adaptation was used to temporarily blind prey or attackers when hunting in night-side regions of the planet.

Aevitan reproduction is centered around long complicated courtship rituals. Females are only fertile every decade or so and typically take on a number of mates, storing and using their genetic material to fertilize her ovum. She carries the embryo in a special abdominal pouch for the first year of gestation. During this time the males vie for her favor in hopes she will pass on more of their contribution as females can selectively pass on the genetic traits of one or more partners.

At about 13 months the embryonic sack is released, in modern Aevitan society, it is left in the care of a breeding facility. The parents have no further connection. In ancestral Aevitan this breeding method allowed for offspring to be stashed away in small protected areas safe from constant environmental hazards. The anonymous eggs are submerged in nutrient pools with hundreds of other offspring. After about 36 months the embryonic sack, stretched thin and transparent, breaks releasing the fully developed infant.

Culture

Aevitan children never know their parents. Growing up in educational colonies they develop strong sibling bonds that last throughout their lives. As well, adult Aevitan, not knowing who may be their offspring treat any young with similar traits as if they were their own. Thus youth have the benefit of many parental figures and expansive social family groups. This has fostered a supportive and open society where, at least in the modernized Aevitan cultures, citizens enjoy a great deal of social equality. This is in sharp contrasts to their reclusive and un-trusting attitude towards outsiders.

Aevitan are extreme isolationists, and while they do have some trade relations with other races, interactions are rare. Aevitan space is intently patrolled and protected. Anyone violating Aevitan territory receive no warning and no leniency, all trespassers are destroyed. This policy has put the Aevitan at odds with a number of other alien cultures.

The Aevitan are obsessed with immortality. In their quest to live forever they’ve developed incredible advances in medical augmentation, bionics, and cybernetics. They’ve also managed to extend their lifespans 20 times the natural limit using a substance known as “Ar’Numa”, despite one of the side effect of Ar’Numa being degenerative blindness. As such much of the modernized civilization has cybernetic ocular prosthetics.

History

The Aevitan homeworld of Ad’strun is the only planet in the binary star system Acry’duo. Roughly five billion years ago one of the Acry’duo suns collapsed into a pulsar destroying all other planets in the system. The debris coalesced and settled forming a ring like mass around the suns.

Ad’struns unique geology means the planet is subject to violent geomagnetic storms, gravimetric fluctuations resulting in frequent earthquakes. Combined with intense bursts of radiation from the pulsar the Aevitan have evolved in the harshest of conditions. Because of the hazards Aevitan culture evolved in dense jungles near the planet's outer edge.

Roughly 80 thousand years ago ancient Aevitan discovered, and learned to harness the power of, a dense mineral called Kul’darah. The substance became associated with various protector gods and at the center of numerous bloody territorial conflicts for about eight thousand years.

As Aevitan civilization entered the scientific age, about 3000 years ago, Kul’darah remained center stage. Refined and purified this element is used in nearly all Aevitan technology in some form or another, including the massive geo-stabilizers that have allowed them to leave the jungles and build their massive plateaus cities.

Kul’darah is used to strengthen building materials, to make ship hulls, and in power generation. It is also the key component in Ar’Numa, responsible for Aevitan longevity. Its extensive use lead to its depletion, and about 1200 years ago Kul’darah sources were nearly exhausted. This scarcity drove Aevitan space technologies as they set out to mine Kul’darah in other regions of the Ad’strun ring.

Politics

Aevitan prefer, and will violently protect their isolation. Trade is rare and are typically done on outposts and in distant regions. Very few have ever been granted passage into Aevitan space. The Aevitan have gone to war with the Aran, Mord, and Cirecidus on a number of occasions.

The internally political structure of the Aevitan is a feudal-like hierarchy ruled over by a single emperor/empress called the Thea’zar. As there are no historical records of lineage, the rulers are determined by a unique birthmark which is believed to signify nobility. The same concept is applied to all that serve under the Thea’zar. All members of the 50 noble families are all determined and grouped by identifying birthmarks.

Family rank and political influence is decided at Tak’lahn, death games held every 6 years in which the major families must volunteer to compete in mortal combat. The results of the games often results in great shifts in power in Aevitan culture.

The Pelarian

Location

  • Didymus (Did-ee-mus)
  • System: Milagro
  • Galaxy: Vigilem (NGC-1291)
  • Galactic Group: Eridanus

Biology

Pelarian biology is extremely similar to that of Humans. As aside from variations in cellular decay during the natural aging process Pelarian physiology and systems function the same as humans and there are no other obvious outwards physical differences.

As well, internally there are some minor differences in organ structure including: a slightly higher blood oxygen, and a tri-lobed brain structure, and a single kidney.

Culture

Pelarian culture was relatively peaceful with steady technological advancement and a progressive social structure. They were roughly equivalent to Human society on Earth around 2100s. However after their population is decimated by an alien threat, their remaining population is forced to abandon their homeworld and take refuge on a moon elsewhere in their solar system.

Having lost their home world, and all but a fraction of their civilization remaining, the Pelarian desperately venture out into the galaxy. The toll on their civilization was great, splintering the survivors into several factions and turning the once prosperous and peaceful race into scavengers, raiding human colonies throughout several systems.

History

2250 - Didymus is caught in the path of a freak meteor storm suffering multiple large surface impacts. Dust and debris launched into the upper atmosphere result in a number of ever worsening environmental declines.

2335 - With severe shifts in climate and frequent devastating earthquakes Pelarian society approaches a critical collapse. Some of the population begins to move off-world to a number of space stations and a temporary colony on the planets moon. Unfortunately dwindling resources and collapsing social structures makes those able to defect a very limited few.

2342 - Scientist researching the causes of the drastic environmental changes discover an alien technology buried deep below the planet surface. This alien hardware is using the planets core to power a massive machine that is devouring the planets raw resources from the inside out. It is believed that the meteors that had bombarded the planet years prior were actually the seeds for whatever this thing was.

2350 - Several attempts are made by the Pelarian militaries to stop the alien technology and the mysterious invaders respond. Hordes of mechanical creatures erupt enmass from the impact craters formed almost a century prior. The mechanized plague spreads across the planet devouring resources and decimating the Pelarian population.

2378 - Having lost their home world, and all but a fraction of their civilization remaining, the Pelarian desperately venture out into the galaxy, encounter another humanoid species with shockingly similar biologies. With few resources the Pelarian begin to scavenge, and eventually raid, the resources of these new aliens.

2387- After years of minor conflicts, with what is believed to be a small Pirate Clan group using alien tech, resulting in ship and resource loses. Brotherhood forces track a raiding party to discover that the culprits are in fact not the Clans, but a previously unknown alien race. After discovering the Pelarians and learning of their desperate plight, negotiations between the alien race and humans began. While some of the displaced Pelarians rejected the idea of trusting humans, the majority of them gave into offers of supplies and trade.

Politics

The Pelarians have strong political ties to the Lumus, although with very little to offer, the relationships is mostly that of accepting aid.

Their alliance with humans further split their already fractured culture resulting in a number of internal conflicts. The bulk of the Pelarian civilization supports the Human connections and work to rebuild their society. However several factions continue their history of raiding and scavenging. For the most part the behavior is tolerated by the Lumus and Brotherhood as it is a minor annoyance, allowing the Pelarians to work out their differences on their own.

The Inaira

Location

  • Homeworld: Wyuna
  • System: Sect Orbis
  • Galaxy: Atlas (NGC-1637)
  • Galactic Group: Eridanus

Biology

The Inaira are a diverse aquatic species with physical traits varying widely between Inairan from different regions of their planet Wyuna. Having adapted to living in high pressure environments they’re typically very resilient, and have a high strength to mass ratio. Another adaptation of living at depth is their ability to regulate internal pressure by constricting cells throughout their body, reducing blood flow and hardening their dermis.

The Inairan have a unique neurological system. Instead of a central neural mass, the brain is distributed along the length of the spinal column. This is beneficial in both pressure regulation and oxygen distribution in low oxygen environments. Another adaptation to hypoxia is self-induced suspended animation, by which the Inairan can survive in near vacuum conditions for months. In many ways the Inairan are perfectly suited for space travel.

Culture

The Inairan homeworld of Wyuna is more than 98% surface water, with many of the oceans reaching depths of over 8,000 kilometers. The entire population, of nearly 15 billion people, live below the surface of this endless ocean in vast cities that expand both outward and down into the depths.

Inairan civilization experienced explosive population and technological growth in a fairly short period of time, do mainly to having an unlimited source of energy. The vast majority of Inairan cities and industry are powered by geothermal vents that line the ocean floors. Unhindered by land or energy scarcity, Inairan culture was able to focus on scientific and technological advancement.

Most of Inairan technology is biological, powered by chemical fuel cells. Their computer systems, for example, are organic structures comprised of specifically designed synthetic neural cells. This technology has a number of benefits. Being organic, these systems are self-healing and able to recover from significant damage. As well they can be rapidly reproduced with minimal resources as they are grown and not manufactured.

History

Roughly 5000 years ago Wyuna was a very different planet, with 30% of it’s water trapped at the poles in massive glaciers. The Inairan civilization occupied both the oceans and the land. Then a massive volcanic eruption obliterated the planets largest land mass killing billions.

The eruption was so powerful that it sent debris into space and burned off much of the planets atmosphere. The increased solar radiation and thick planet-wide ash cloud resulted in an accelerated greenhouse effect. Within 120 years the ice caps were entirely melted turning the planet into a vast ocean, with the only visible land being the still active volcano.

The ash and chemicals released by the volcano made the air and epipelagic zone of the oceans uninhabitable. The global catastrophe however  proved to be a boon for Inairan civilization. Fear of extinction fueled a scientific revolution, and over the next 1800 years they experienced explosive technological growth.

However, despite the ability to expand into new oceanic territories, the smoldering volcano was still spewing out millions of tons of toxins that continued to pollute deeper into the oceans. The Inairan believed that in order to survive they would need to relocate to a new planet. Within 500 years they had highly advanced ships, and near light speed technology. 100 years after that, they had begun colonizing other planets.

Politics

The downside to the Inairan’s rapid technological growth is that their social advancement has not kept pace. Inairan social structure is based on a cast system, with the upper casts living in a near utopian society, and lower casts being little more than slaves. The enormous inequality between casts results in constant civil unrest and frequent, albeit short lived, rebellions. There are no negotiation as the ruling classes consider genocide the fastest best solution to quell uprisings.

Being weak in military technologies the Inaira have very little interaction with other races. And while they are represented in Parceil, there is marked tension between them and the Cysti.

Cirecidus Domini

Location

  • Homeworld: Various
  • System: Various
  • Galaxy: Various
  • Constellation: Eridanus

Biology

The Cirecidus Domini (Sur-a-sidus Dom-eh-nee) are a highly intelligent insectoid species. Physically the Cirecidus vary greatly in size, shape, and abilities. Their exceptionally resilient exoskeleton make them impervious to nearly all forms of radiation and they are able to withstand extreme temperatures.

The Cirecidus are also able to regenerate their entire physical structure. The brain and a specialized set of glands responsible for protein production are generally located in the mid-section and protected by a dense bony mass. If this central structure remains intact, a Cirecidus can regenerate tissue and limbs regardless of the amount of damage the body has sustained.

Cirecidus reproduction processes vary as greatly as their form. They utilize both sexual and asexual fertilization, and gestation ranges from internal, to external egg clutches, and in rare instances, the use of a host. Regardless of method, offspring mature very rapidly, reaching full adult size in about 4 to 12 weeks.

There are three main sub-species.

The Mantodea have a fairly long lifespan, an average reproduction rate, and are the least biologically adaptable. They average in size from 2 meters to 4 meters in height, and are typically bi-pedal. They have developed the most humanoid form, most likely as an adaptation for dealing with other species in trade and commerce.

The Apocrita have a similar lifespan to the Mantodea, they however have much higher reproduction rates and are far more diverse and biologically adaptable. Apocrita are typically 3 to 5 meters in height with thickly armored exoskeletons. They're primarily bi-pedal but other variations are not uncommon.

The Formicid are the most abundant of the Cirecidus, outnumbering both Mantodea and Apocrita. They however have very short lifespans that more than offset their extremely high reproduction rates. The Formicid are also by far the most biologically adaptable and physically diverse of the Cirecidus, ranging in size from half a meter to 6 meters.

Culture

Technologically advanced and politically active, the Cirecidus occupy vast territories and control a powerful trade empire. Their extremely adaptable anatomy allows them to live on worlds uninhabitable by other species. Harvesting resources from these hostile worlds gives them a monopoly on many rare elements.

Cirecidus society does not appear to have any cultural traditions or mythologies. There are no regular celebrations and they don't have a creation story or established religions. Generally the Cirecidus are utterly obsessed with status and power. Internally, the sub-species, have been at war for eons. Perpetual conflicts between the Mantodea and Apocrita have turned much of the Karora Void into a graveyard.

The Mantodea control most of the Cirecidus empire, and do so by using the Formicid as slave labor. The Apocrita want control, and conflicts between the Mantodea and Apocrita are played out in frequent battles, with the Formicid usually caught in the middle.

Conflicts with other races are typically trade related, usually with the Apocrita doing anything they can to disrupt Mantodea operations. However all Cirecidus will defend breeding colonies very aggressively, often attacking those who wander to close without warning.

Politics

The Mantodea trade regularly with human colonies and are generally in good standing with Lumus factions. There is however tension with the Brotherhood remaining from their initial encounters. There are also occasionally conflicts between the Brotherhood and Apocrita when defending Lumus trading outposts.

The Aran

Location

  • Homeworld: Araenielle
  • System: Pol’vena
  • Galaxy: Genitrix (NGC-1532)
  • Constellation: Eridanus

Biology

The Aran are a human-like species having evolved on a planet very similar to Earth. There are a few defining characteristics that differentiate the Aran from Humans. The eyes of the Aran have a tricuspid iris and a natural phosphorescence. The Aran also have some subtle differences in musculature that make them on average stronger than Humans. Even the reproductive system and development of the Aran are similar to Human.

Aran females are sexually ravenous and appear to have complete control over their fertility. They secrete a pheromone that is believed to play a role in male subservience. It has shown to have minor effects on Human males, causing impaired motor skills and slurred speech with prolonged exposure.

Culture

The Aran are a warlike culture; however, unlike the Mord, the Aran are not a series of scattered empires engaging in ritualistic conflicts among themselves. They comprise a vast unified empire, controlling innumerable planets, star bases, and trade routes throughout the Eridanus cluster.

Aran civilization is matriarchal with the men being absolutely subservient, and treated as prized pets at best. In fact much of the Aran economy revolves around the breeding trade, where males are bought and sold like livestock based on specific genetic traits.

The combination of selective breeding, superior training, advanced technology, and a fanatical devotion to their female masters, Aran males make up one of the largest, and widely feared military forces in the known Universe.

History

Very little is known of Aran history, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that their culture has changed significantly, other than technologically, over the last 130,000 years.

Politics

The Aran political structure is fairly straightforward. Every territory is controlled by a Sovereign, each of whom answer to the Supreme Empress on the home world of Araenielle. Territory and rank are determined by a system of favor, operating on a 10 year cycle.

At the beginning of every cycle, whichever Sovereign who gains the Supreme Empress’s favor by conquest of new territory or resource production, is rewarded with the territory of the Sovereign in the lowest favor. The disgraced Sovereign not only loses her territory, but her life as well in a ceremonial execution.

Being in the Supreme Empress’s top favor is not always the best place. When a young Sovereign reaches the age of fertility, she is given a portion of the highest ranking Sovereign’s territory to begin her rule. This system ensures that the weak are culled, and the strong never get so strong as to challenge the Supreme rule.

Despite having a desire for conquest, the Aran are also capable diplomats and often choose to expand their empire through trade relations rather than war.

The Mord

Location

Biology

The Mord were originally genetically engineered by a now extinct culture. They are humanoid in form and characterized by reptilian and mammalian features. An adult male Mord typically stands over 2.5 meters tall, with a thick bone structure and musculature. Some species have tough scaly skin and bony protrusions, while others have dark leathery skin and are nearly hairless.

The females, or Mord Queens, reproduce by spontaneous replication; there is no participation by the males. All diversity in Mord civilization comes from the Queen’s ability to consciously direct the genetic development of fetal Mord. This allows them to produce offspring specifically suited for whatever role the society is lacking.

The gestation cycle for a Mord is about 10 days. Infants are born very small and encased in a protective membrane. Mord are fully developed and near adult size within 21 days, they are however in a near vegetative state. It takes an additional 30 days for their brains to catch up to their bodies. A Queen can produce thousands of offspring in her lifetime. Near the end of the Queen’s life, approximately 260 years, she will produce a female offspring that inherits the genetic memory of all the Queens from which it is descended.

Culture

The Mord are warriors. Their entire culture revolves around a complicated system of ritualistic warfare, both internally and with any other alien civilization the Mord view as worthy.

For the most part, conflicts are confined between the 130 or so Mord empires spread throughout the Kah Minor galaxy. However once an individual empire has gained enough power that they cannot be challenged internally, they look for battle elsewhere. Usually seeking out the most powerful adversary they can find, which is typically the Aran and Tsitrean races.

Large Mord Empires don’t tend to stay large for long. All the while they are fighting external battles, there is a constant struggle for power within the Empire itself. Rank in the Mord political structure, for what it is, is decided entirely by group skirmishes and hand to hand combat.

History

The Mord are the product of an extremely advanced race called the Kreast. The Kreast engineered the Mord as gladiator warriors, and used them to fight in massive planetary-wide, war games. After centuries of being forced to fight in bloody campaigns for the amusement of their masters, the Mord rebelled, and in a few decades, completely wiped out the Kreast.

Since the time of independence, approximately 24,000 years ago, the Mord have spread throughout their galaxy, colonizing worlds and forming many empires. Unable to escape their nature, they ultimately became embroiled in perpetual warfare among one another.

In time, their ships and technologies began to deteriorate, and the knowledge to repair them died with the Kreat. The Mord began to seek out and attack other alien civilizations for their technology, however the races that possessed the most advanced warships and weapons, tended to fight back. Eventually the Mord learned to develop diplomatic skills, and are now not only feared warriors but also shrewd traders.

Politics

On Kalin there is a very small central Mord government that exists solely to represent the combined Mord interests in Parceil.

Prone to aggression and violence the Mord are party to frequent interventions by the Cysti. Many times smaller Mord Empires will attack a weaker race with the intention of forcing a negotiation. They will then make trade demands in exchange for non-aggression. In this way the Empire can build resources without fighting an “unworthy battle”.

The Mord are also usually in some degree of conflict with the Aran, another powerful warlike race. Both sides have a shared hatred and admiration for each other, and aside from a few territorial disputes, their battles are more shows of power than anything else.

Soolawtheen Agrameesus

Location

  • Homeworld: Unknown
  • System: Unknown
  • Galaxy: Unknown
  • Galactic Group: Unknown

History

Discovered in 2163 in the Milky Way galaxy, known as the Sleepers, the Sool were humanities the first actual encounter with an alien race. Despite the inhabitants of the Hollow Moon all being in stasis the encounter fueled humanities push further into the Universe.

Over the decades more evidence of the Sleepers was found and studied but no definitive answers or significant clues, until the introduction to the Pelarian race. Their planet recently devastated by a mysterious force led Imperium scientists to the breakthrough they needed and on the path to tracking down this illusive alien.

The Soolawtheen Agrameesus (Su-lal-theen Ah-grah-mee-soos), also known as Sool and Sleepers are a deeply mysterious life form. Very little is known definitively as most of the available data is derived from inconclusive scientific studies on limited specimens, and the rest from legends and lore of various alien cultures.

While they have many names; Agra, First, Sutheen, L'astur, Dredha, most mythos agree that the Sool came into existence during the initial formation of the universe making them one of the oldest lifeforms known.

From the Cysti; “The First became aware of its being and became starved for meaning and seeing the vastness of the Universe it split, a fragment for every star, and set itself to know them.”

From the Aran, Tome of Creation, "The blackness took breath and found itself empty and set forth to fill itself with all of light."

From the Toran, Toa: Genesis, "The Universe gave birth to two forces and endowed them with knowledge. The Literia was to make the light and seed creation. The Sutheen was to create the void and serve to devour."

From the Aevitan, Book of Chaos, "The blackness birthed light and to blackness light will return ushered by the L'astur that knows only hunger."

From the Tsitrean, Founder Scrolls, "One became light, the Histhur. One became blackness, the Dredha. Two devour each other for eternity."

As with most creation lores there are many interpretations within the culture. Some view the stories in the context of cosmic balance while others see the Sool as a lurking evil meant to destroy all life making the them the nightmare demons of many cultures.

Biology

Soolawtheen physiology could be vaguely described as both mechanical and biological however neither aspect can be completely identified  by normal conventions. While many of the physical traits resemble the form and functions of rigid mechanical systems these parts are grown and heal much as a biological counterpart. The same ambiguity applies for the apparent biological systems and not one recognizable molecular compound can be identified in either.

Sool physical form of can vary widely depending on the function of the subject. When the sleepers were first discovered it was initially believed that the Sleepers were separate from the insect like drones that seemed to maintain the Hollow Moon facility. It was later determined however that the drones, and even what were believed to be ships, were in fact all variations of the Sool organisms.

The one common aspect of all Sool studied to date is what has been defined as a Transient Consciousness. The essence of an individual is not bound to it's physical form and has the ability to move between, swap, and share the bodies of other Sool. It is also speculated based on documented account of various races that there is another species of, or an evolved version of, Sool that is completely energy based having no defined physical form.

Culture

An individual Sool is referred to as a Fragment and depending on the form it takes they seems to have varying degrees of intelligence. Though individuals act as a single consciousness, there is a clear coordination of information between Fragments in a given location.

It is speculated that younger Fragments must exist in simple forms, such as mechanoid creatures, and as they mature they're able to form or inhabit more complex systems. It is also speculated when a planet or moon is seeded not only is it's mass converted, but the "fetal" Fragments themselves are actually derived from the host worlds core energy.

For the most part the Sool have very little interaction with other civilizations and are often relegated to legend for 1000's of years. However in the rare instances where direct contact is made the result is rarely good.

The Lim-nytes

Location

  • Homeworld: Creat (Kreet)
  • System: Cy (Cee)
  • Galaxy: Magna Spiralem (NGC-1232)
  • Constellation: Eridanus

Biology

The Lim-nytes are humanoid in appearance with an average height of 2 meters. They also have very similar biological systems and organ structures as humans, with the exception of the reproductive system. Only 1 in 50 Lim-nyte are born expressing a gender. Those that are born as male or female are segregated into specially protected colonies and treated as royalty.

This behavior is due to the fact gendered Lim-nyte can only reproduce once, and during the reproduction process they are extremely dangerous. In order for the Lim-nyte female to conceive the male must produce a specific hormone during mating. This hormone is toxic to the Lim-nyte, and the male dies shortly after mating. The female is immune to the birth hormone during the entire gestation cycle, however as soon as she gives birth her body succmbs to the poison.

This event is called, O’dla cheih davhena (Ode-la-shay-dav-heh-na) which translates to “the giving of life”, and is a globally shared cultural ritual of the Lim-nyte.

Culture

The Lim-nytes (Lem-nee-its) are a fairly primitive race roughly 30,000 years old. Technologically they are the equivalent of iron-age humans. However while the Lim-nyte may live in villages and still be using beasts of burden to drive their primitive industries, their knowledge of space is very advanced.

The Lim-nytes are more than aware that there are beings on other planets and that these beings possess greater technologies than their own. This knowledge has greatly shaped their civilization.

Lim-nyte civilization is complex with many societies spread across the planet, each with their own system of government, cultures, and languages. And each of them revering one or more of the five alien races they have encountered as deity. Not so much in the sense of being all-mighty beings like Gods, but rather than as role models, influencing the direction taken by various Lim-nyte cultures in their sciences and philosophies.

The largest most advanced Lim-nyte society is by far the Diezen. The Diezen have a place of reverence for all five of the alien races, but the Cysti hold the highest place of honor. As such Diezen society is dedicated to bringing peace to all Lim-nytes. This endeavour that has yielded only moderate success among the Lim-nyte that follow the influence of the Mord and Aran.

History

The Lim-nyte civilization, having developed written language very early, has an exceptionally detailed historical record. Most of their history is fairly typical. They began as small nomadic tribes, there were a number of wars and natural disasters, as well as periods of enlightenment.

The Lim-nyte creation mythology has become a particular point of interest human researchers. “In the beginning there was a void. And then the Tihen (Tee-hen), or Gods, wept the world into existence. The Gods then planted the seeds from which the Lim-nytes sprang.”

Politics

By far the Cysti have the most influence over the Lim-nyte, but the Aran do not rank far behind. Creat is a resource rich world and the Lim-nyte are utterly defenseless against an attack by an advanced race. That is, if not for the Aran.

The Aran have deemed Creat a protected world because of a particular gemstone found only there. The Nova Stone is a rare and beautiful mineral deposit highly valued among the Aran ruling class. Surprisingly this has not led to exploitation of the Lim-nyte or the natural environment of Creat by the Aran due to the Aran cultural beliefs surrounding the stone. Instead Aran representatives receive the stones as gifts by the Lim-nyte during an annual festival honoring them.

The Mord also frequently visit the Lim-nyte, though it seems to be merely to antagonize the Aran.

The Cysti are on average 2.8 meters tall, thin, with elongated limbs and necks. They’re skin color is greyish blue with darker striping or spots of various tones highlighting features and often running along their spines.. They have no visible ears however have very acute hearing, sensing sound vibrations with a specialized organ structure in their chests. Their nostrils are positioned high on the cheek bones under their eyes and are only used as a scent receptors. Respiration is done through an opening at the base of the throat behind the jaw.

The Cysti do not have genders. Their history would suggest this has not always been the case however. Very little is known of how they breed but given their advanced levels of technology it is assumed they use a form of cloning, but it must be stressed that this is only an assumption.

The most notable biological characteristic is that they naturally emit a low level energy that has a soothing effect on most genetically similar species under normal circumstances. They have also shown that they can increase the intensity of this energy for a short time. While normal exposure is harmless to humans, high doses and prolonged exposure have been shown to have adverse psychological effects.

Culture

The Cystu Pheun (Sis-too Fee-un) actually consist of two branches of the same race, the Cysti and the Doe.

The Cysti (Sis-tee) are prominently known throughout the Eridanus cluster and have a complex culture filled with many rituals and celebrations. They are very involved in the affairs of other races and seem to use their unique biology to foster peace. A low level energy field emitted naturally by the Cysti that has a soothing effect on most species.

The Cysti are extremely advanced, far beyond that of their outward appearances. The Cysti homeworld of Cryiral has few signs of technology. It’s not until you realize that the Cysti artificially created the entire planet do you grasp how advanced they actually are. The Cysti do not have much industry, and other than some very popular wines, they do not seem to export any resources to other cultures.

The Cysdodiue (Sis-doh-dee-ew), also referred to as the Doe, play a significant role in Cysti culture. They are of the same species as the Cysti, however do not share any biological characteristics. The Doe have no identifiable culture and no known methods of communication. They do not reproduce and they are only found on the planet Docean – the original Cystu Pheun home world.

The Doe are genetically fused with their world as a result of a war more than five hundred thousand years ago. They have since evolved to be nearly indistinguishable from the plant life on their planet, and barring an environmental disaster, they are essentially immortal. The Doe that live today are the remains of those that survived the conflict 500,000 years ago and this fate, inflicted by war, is the motivating influence for all of Cysti civilization.

History

500,000 years ago the Cystu Pheun were an extremely technologically advanced civilization. They lived in relative peace until they were visited by an alien race. The beings, called the Trin, were the last of a species nearly exterminated by an unknown force. They called upon the Cystu Pheun to give them refuge, which they received with open arms.

As time went on the Trin flourished among the Cystu Pheun and became so much a part of the culture that the two species began to cross-breed. This divided the Cystu Pheun culture between the pure Cystudiue and the genetically mixed Cysti. This divide eventually led to a massive war between the two sides. A war that the minority Cysti were losing. Desperate to survive the Cysti unleashed a terrible weapon. This weapon was designed to eliminate the Cystudiue by attacking the very thing that they cherished most, their pure genes.

The weapon succeeded in ending the war, but it did not have the effect the Cysti expected. Instead of breaking down the DNA of the Cystudiue specifically, it attacked the genetic structure of every organism on the planet excluding only the Cysti. Billions of Cystudiue did die, but tens of thousands did not, instead their DNA was twisted and fused to the plant life around them. This was not a fast process. Legend tells of the ground trembling from the sound of agony as their molecules were transformed. The process took decades and eventually they no longer had mouths to scream or nerves to feel. But it was not only the Cystudiue that suffered. The weapons also attacked and mutated the pure blood Trin population.

The Cysti were so horrified at what they had done they dedicated their culture to peace and became the caretakers of the Cystudiue and the planet Docean. To this day it is tradition that Cysti visiting Docean bow and cry a tear into the soil to show that what was done is not forgotten.

Politics

The Cysti seem to try and spread and maintain peace. However, despite their desire for peace, the Cysti refuse to become involved in conflicts beyond negotiation, and only then if all parties involved request their intervention.

For such interactions the Cysti are the hosts of the Parceil (Par-see-el), which roughly translates to “Gathering of Minds”. The Parceil is essentially an intergalactic United Nations. The Cysti also completely lack a military of any kind however it seems that no known species would consider attacking them for fear of retaliation by any or all of their allies.
