Sentinans

Sentinans (Also Sentinians)

There's an old saying in the Lumus culture: "When you look into the eyes of a Sentinan" you see the soul of the universe." There are but few human settlers that have traveled farther or have seen more than this vibrant and colorful group. Descendants from the first explorers who did LEAPs of faith to discover Draco-Tao and found the systems and worlds that are now the foundation of the Lumus culture. While it was the brotherhood soldiers that freed the rest of humanity from the Gaians it was those who would become Sentina Navigators and their ships that carried Humanity into its new future.

They could have been on the vanguard of the new culture, but to the surprise of many they departed and settled on the fringes of the galaxy preferring the freedom of open space to the conformity, in their opinion,  that the Imperium would bring, They would go on and form what would be known as the Nomad Colonies.

What happened to the colonies is well known and a tragedy, but the few that survived and escaped settled around the remote mining colonies in the Heaven system, on the planet Sentina and later its moon Braveheart. They quickly realized that the fear of conformity was unfounded. The Imperium embraced their lost kin recognizing their bravery and talent as navigators, giving them a larger autonomy than any others have. They are the Imperium's lifeforce: Sentinan freighters and miners.

Families like Cepheus and Brandi are leaders in the economy and even the Brotherhood recognizes their prowess employing many on their ships as Navigator. Indeed in the Lumus Arma  there are far more Sentinans enlisted that their small population would suggest.

Today they still do what they do best; Extracting and transporting goods and supplies, and of course their real passion: exploring. Whether in far off Vigilem or returning to their ancient home in the Milky Way. Sentinans are the ones looking over that edge and daring to take the step into the unknown.

Sentinans are relatively easy to spot, by the various tattoos that cover their body and their dress is practical and functional, yet stylish. Their world revolves around their families, even in the Lumus Arma it not uncommon for one ship to contain an entire Family. Sentina has a official Population of 30 million although most of those live in on stations orbiting the planet or on their ships originating from the planet.

Sensor Technologies – Human

The following is a general reference for common human sensor technologies.

Visual/Transponder

Short range using various forms of visual technologies and transponder registrations to identify vessels. While limited to a fairly short range they’re fast and their accuracy is nearly 100%.

Effective Range: ~.5ly

EM Signature

Short to Mid range, detecting and analyzing  the distinct EM signatures of different power systems and engine types. While having fairly substantial ranges and a high degree of accuracy they are only effective on stations and outposts in order to filter EM signatures against background noise.

Effective Range: ~250ly

Gravimetric Distortion

Long range analyzing shape and mass of ships over long range by measuring the gravimetric distortion caused by the vessel. These sensor types are highly reliable as they are not affected by common interference such as EM and Nebula static. They are also difficult to fool as it is nearly impossible to mask gravity displacement. The drawback is that they can only reliably detect ships or fleets large enough to cause gravity fluctuations.

Effective Range: ~1000ly

Probe Nets

Networks of probes that use combinations of various sensor types to cover large areas of space far outside stationed sensor arrays. The main drawback is that they are prone to disruptions from common cosmic hazards such as micro meteor impacts and thus require regular maintenance.

Biometric

Internal systems used to detect living beings inside facilities through a variety methods. Usually using registered unique bio-electric or neural signatures but pheromone and air displacement sensors are also used for tracking, in particular with alien visitors.

Solide

Solide is a moon orbiting the 4th planet in the Sol system of Draco Tao. It was founded as a secret outpost during the Gaian war on Earth and was the staging ground for the Pangaean liberation and birth place of the Brotherhood of Sol.

The moon is rich in ores and natural resources used for the production of military technologies. The entire western hemisphere of Solide is essentially a massive weapons manufacturing facility producing guns, armor, and vessels.

It is also the seat of power for the Brotherhood Command and the central weapons manufacturing and shipyard for the Brotherhood Ferrum.

Sentina

Sentina is the principle planet in the New Heaven System. Established in 2238 it is one of the oldest colonized planets in Draco Tao. Dry with very little atmosphere it orbits tightly to the systems brown dwarf Hades. Despite the hostile environment, Sentina is home to roughly 30 million people living in the massive dome of Congress City. There are also numerous settlements on Sentina,  mostly mining collectives located in the northern hemisphere.

Sentina Trade Pact

Sentina Trade Pact is a set of agreed upon rules of conduct between various parties trading within the three galaxies – Draco Tao, Vigilem, and Milky Way. These are guidelines meant to promote healthy trade practices. Laws dictating trade restrictions are set and enforced by individual governing bodies. This pact does not override or provide protection from any local authority beyond that described below.

Singularity Weapons

Developed in 2266 in a Brotherhood weapons research program, the device, in the most basic terms, collapses critically dense matter into an artificial micro singularity.

The gravitaional effects last only a few seconds under optimal conditions but nonetheless has devistating potential. Early prototypes were capable of creating gravitational pockets strong enough to affect navigation, and even destroy vessels in a localized area.

The true potential of the weapon was realized in 2270 when a Mark1 devices was used during the Pirate Clan Wars. Detonated between a planet and its moon the weapon destabilized the moon’s orbit and caused devastating tectonic events on the planet triggering an extinction level event.

In 2298 a larger and vastly more power Mark II version of the weapon was test detonated in a romote nebula. The test obliterated more than a million square kilometers of the gas cloud, collapsing it into a small unstable protostar. The radiation wave from the protostar formation extended for more than a light year at deadly levels.

Development of a Mark III singularity weapon is completed in 2310. The initial test of this new device far exceeded the projections. The resulting singularity is so powerful that all research was stopped, locked down, and moved to a top secret Ferrum outpost located deep in a vast area of unoccupied space known as the Eridanus Super Void*.

The manufacturing of a singularity device requires stabilized critically dense matter which is only found in the core of dying stars. The method of its extraction is classified.

Due to the danger and rarity of the required matter the stockpiling of singularity weapons impossible. There are only three Mark I and one Mark II devices maintained by the Brotherhood at any given time. They are kept on separate stations, the location of which are constantly changing and unknown to even top ranking officials. If needed the devices can be launched using a similar specialized LEAP catapult used for launching long range probes. In this manner the weapons are both secure and able to be deployed to nearly any target at any time.

*The Eridanus  Super Void is a vast isolated area of space devoid of galaxies. There are no visible stars or perceivable radio signals. It is estimated to extend more than a billion light years.

Shifts In Human Reproduction

Given the wide range of environmental conditions humans now live, some reproductive anomalies began to emerge. The increase of the average life expectancy of 250 years also came with an extension of the childbearing years. Typically 14 to 80 years of age for women. However now increases in gestation were also being noted. Sometimes by as much as three to six months, particularly on planets and colonies with lower gravity. As well the occurrence of twins and plural fertilization had become extremely rare.

History

Discovered in 2163 in the Milky Way galaxy, known as the Sleepers, the Sool were humanities the first actual encounter with an alien race. Despite the inhabitants of the Hollow Moon all being in stasis the encounter fueled humanities push further into the Universe.

Over the decades more evidence of the Sleepers was found and studied but no definitive answers or significant clues, until the introduction to the Pelarian race. Their planet recently devastated by a mysterious force led Imperium scientists to the breakthrough they needed and on the path to tracking down this illusive alien.

The Soolawtheen Agrameesus (Su-lal-theen Ah-grah-mee-soos), also known as Sool and Sleepers are a deeply mysterious life form. Very little is known definitively as most of the available data is derived from inconclusive scientific studies on limited specimens, and the rest from legends and lore of various alien cultures.

While they have many names; Agra, First, Sutheen, L'astur, Dredha, most mythos agree that the Sool came into existence during the initial formation of the universe making them one of the oldest lifeforms known.

From the Cysti; “The First became aware of its being and became starved for meaning and seeing the vastness of the Universe it split, a fragment for every star, and set itself to know them.”

From the Aran, Tome of Creation, "The blackness took breath and found itself empty and set forth to fill itself with all of light."

From the Toran, Toa: Genesis, "The Universe gave birth to two forces and endowed them with knowledge. The Literia was to make the light and seed creation. The Sutheen was to create the void and serve to devour."

From the Aevitan, Book of Chaos, "The blackness birthed light and to blackness light will return ushered by the L'astur that knows only hunger."

From the Tsitrean, Founder Scrolls, "One became light, the Histhur. One became blackness, the Dredha. Two devour each other for eternity."

As with most creation lores there are many interpretations within the culture. Some view the stories in the context of cosmic balance while others see the Sool as a lurking evil meant to destroy all life making the them the nightmare demons of many cultures.

Biology

Soolawtheen physiology could be vaguely described as both mechanical and biological however neither aspect can be completely identified  by normal conventions. While many of the physical traits resemble the form and functions of rigid mechanical systems these parts are grown and heal much as a biological counterpart. The same ambiguity applies for the apparent biological systems and not one recognizable molecular compound can be identified in either.

Sool physical form of can vary widely depending on the function of the subject. When the sleepers were first discovered it was initially believed that the Sleepers were separate from the insect like drones that seemed to maintain the Hollow Moon facility. It was later determined however that the drones, and even what were believed to be ships, were in fact all variations of the Sool organisms.

The one common aspect of all Sool studied to date is what has been defined as a Transient Consciousness. The essence of an individual is not bound to it's physical form and has the ability to move between, swap, and share the bodies of other Sool. It is also speculated based on documented account of various races that there is another species of, or an evolved version of, Sool that is completely energy based having no defined physical form.

Culture

An individual Sool is referred to as a Fragment and depending on the form it takes they seems to have varying degrees of intelligence. Though individuals act as a single consciousness, there is a clear coordination of information between Fragments in a given location.

It is speculated that younger Fragments must exist in simple forms, such as mechanoid creatures, and as they mature they're able to form or inhabit more complex systems. It is also speculated when a planet or moon is seeded not only is it's mass converted, but the "fetal" Fragments themselves are actually derived from the host worlds core energy.

For the most part the Sool have very little interaction with other civilizations and are often relegated to legend for 1000's of years. However in the rare instances where direct contact is made the result is rarely good.

Sub-Spectrum Data Burst Communications

First successfully measured by Terrance Wilcox on June 24th 2083, a long theorized light spectrum existing far below known wavelengths. Sub-spectrum wavelengths travel 200 times faster than the upper light spectrum, outside normal space, and passes through all known matter. It cannot be reflected or bent like visible light, and many scientists theorized that sub-spectrum light played some role in our perception of time.

In April of 2088 Eugene Mills, a 28 year old engineer working for a small technology firm in former Canada, createed the Sub-Light Data Burst Communications array. The immediate advantage of the SLDB system was speed of communication over long distances. Eugene also devised a method for secure communications by spreading data across multiple wavelengths making the signal nearly impossible to intercept. SLDB quickly replaced MBUS technology for deep space communication and persists to this day as the primary communications technology, with noted advances in hardware and data compression.
